What does it mean to ‘Download latest package’ on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO

Download latest package is a menu option in the settings of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO phones running HyperOS or MIUI. It allows you to download and install the latest available “clean” version of the operating system for your device. All personal data and user files remain intact during the installation.

Unlike incremental OTA updates, which include only changed files, the full package contains all components of the system. As a result, its size reaches several gigabytes — much larger than any OTA patch.

Why use the full package

This method helps avoid potential issues caused by a failed or incomplete OTA update, provides a clean system state, and can resolve various bugs on your phone or tablet. OTA updates may sometimes conflict with leftover files from older system versions — installing the full package minimizes that risk.

For example, if your phone experiences sound issues, freezes, or lags, installing the full package might help (if not, consider resetting it to factory settings).

When installed, your device will be updated to the latest available version of HyperOS or MIUI. User data and files will remain untouched.

It’s also often used to restore the original system without needing to deal with Recovery or Fastboot modes. This is what makes the full package different from other update methods that must be manually downloaded and installed through a specific mode.

Similarly, many Windows users prefer downloading a full image of the operating system with integrated updates and reinstalling a clean system instead of relying on incremental updates.

How to install the full package

Before installation, make sure your phone’s battery is charged to at least 70%. If the phone turns off during the process, you may experience a bootloop or even a bricked device.

We also recommend creating a backup of important data. The risk of failure is low, but losing personal files by accident would be unfortunate.

After installation, the ZIP file can be safely deleted — if it hasn’t been automatically removed by the system.

Sometimes the download gets stuck at “waiting for connection.” If that happens, turn on Wi-Fi and try again.

If you receive a download error, try again later. This issue is usually caused by Xiaomi’s servers being temporarily overloaded.

When to download it

Here are the most common situations where downloading the full package is recommended:

  • The device is unstable (lags, freezes, crashes).
  • Bugs appeared after an OTA update (e.g. audio, camera, or network issues).
  • OTA updates are unavailable or fail to install.
  • You want a clean installation of the system without wiping personal data.
  • You changed region or ROM version (e.g. China → Global).
  • You’ve unlocked the bootloader and want to return to the official operating system.
  • You’re using a custom ROM and want to go back to stock MIUI or HyperOS.

As you can see, this feature provides a simple way to reinstall the operating system from scratch while preserving user data — and without needing to unlock the bootloader.
